The short version: everything you put into Personal Finance Program stays on your own computer. We never see it, and the program never connects to the internet.
Where your information is kept
Your accounts, transactions, categories, rules, forecast items and settings are stored in a data file on your computer, in the folder you choose when you create it. You can keep several data files. Each one is backed up automatically when the program closes, into a backup folder you choose.
The bank and credit card files you import stay in your own import folder. After an import, each file is moved into an Imported folder inside it. A small settings file that lists your data files, and remembers window sizes and report layouts, is kept in your Windows user profile.
None of this is sent to Jeremy Hillier Consulting Inc or to anyone else. There is no account to create, no sign-in, no bank connection, and no cloud storage. The program never asks for your online banking password. It contains no advertising, no analytics and no usage tracking.
The program does not contact the internet
Personal Finance Program works entirely offline. It does not check for updates, send error reports or connect to your bank. You bring transactions in yourself, by downloading files from your bank's website and importing them. New versions are posted on our download page and are installed only if you choose to.
Things that happen only when you ask
Opening bank files. If you choose during installation to open .qfx files with the program, Windows is told to open them with it. You can change this in Settings or in Windows at any time.
Reports and exports. PDF reports, CSV files, copied figures and printouts that you create are saved, copied or printed where you choose. They go nowhere else.
If you keep your data file in a synced folder
If you choose to store your data file, backups or import folder in a folder that is synchronised by a service such as OneDrive or Dropbox, that service will hold a copy under its own terms. That is your choice and is between you and that service; the program itself does not upload anything. Because these files contain your financial records, consider carefully where you keep them.
Your control over your information
Because your information is held only by you, you are in full control of it. You can back it up, move it, or delete it at any time, and uninstalling the program does not remove your data files, backups or bank files unless you delete them yourself. We hold no copy, so there is nothing for us to provide, correct or erase on request. If you have emailed us, you may ask us to delete that correspondence.
Changes to this note
If a future version of the program changes any of this, this note will be updated before that version is released, and the change will be listed in What's New.
